I got my first hedgehog in 2022 (Alfred) and my first breeding hedgehogs (Sihana and Xenos) in 2024 but I’ve been in love with these animals since I was child watching „Alfred, the detective hedgehog”😂.
After seeing how much joy I got from Alfred I wanted to start breeding so I got Oreo and Hebe (who I’ve, thankfully, never bred) and only after I did more research and I learned of the genetic disease that kills them and that has no cure, Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome. I looked into pedigreed hedgehogs and realized that there are none in Romania. I still wanted to breed and so I imported two pedigreed, unrelated hedgehogs from Germany.
Thankfully, I found an organization that accepts breeders from other countries as well and I got my herd name (Alex’s Hedgies) and I had the first pedigreed litter in Romania.
I expected to have a hard time advocating for pedigrees and ethical breeding but so far the people that got hedgehogs from me understand why they matter. I’ve also received recommendations and help from Exotic Vet, where they understand and support my mission of educating people and helping them get hedgehogs from ethical sources.
Truth be told, when people ask me to give them hedgehogs for breeding I tell them to get registered first and then recommend a few kennels from outside of Romania as I only have one line (so far) because more sick hedgehogs is the last thing that I want.
At this very moment I’m working on getting a second male and maybe, someday, I’ll have more separate lines but we’ll see.

Mi-am luat primul meu arici, Alfred, în 2022 și primii arici cu pedigree, Xenos și Sihana, în 2024. Dar, de fapt și de drept, am adorat aceste animale de când eram mică și mă uitam la desenul animat ,,Alfred, ariciul detectiv” 😂.
După ce m-am informat mai mult am decis să mă apuc de breeding, moment în care le-am luat pe Hebe și pe Oreo. Din fericire nu am apucat să fac breeding cu ele pentru că am aflat despre o boală a aricilor care nu are niciun leac și care îi omoară foarte devreme, Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome. Atunci am început să mă interesez de arici cu pedigree. Tot atunci am realizat că în România nu sunt arici cu pedigree așa că am adus doi din Germania.
Din fericire, am găsit o organizație care acceptă și crescători din alte țări și m-am înscris acolo.
Mă așteptam să-mi fie foarte greu să le explic oamenilor de ce este important certificatul pedigree dar, până acum, toți cei care au luat arici de la mine au înțeles. Am primit recomandări și ajutor și de la cabinetul Exotic Vet unde îmi înțeleg și susțin misiunea de a crește arici sănătoși și sociabili.
La momentul actual nu dau arici de breeding pentru că am o singură linie dar îi pot ajuta pe cei care își doresc să își cumpere din altă țară și să se înregistreze în organizația din care fac parte.
